Run the Rock

Thank you Erin, for a very successful fund raising event! A good time was had by all and we are all looking forward to next years "Run the Rock"!

Saturday, October 6, 2007

We need more Erins

The KMXT Run the Rock Marathon, Half-Marathon and 5-Kilometer race went off like clockwork today. At the apres' race BBQ, organizer Erin Harrington dished out a couple dozen thanks to those who helped make the race such a success, and indeed the help from every single one of them was vital.

Let's not let Erin's contribution be lost, though. Without her, there's no idea for the race. Without her, there's no organizing the committee to plan it. Without her, there's no drive to sustain the effort. Without her, it'd just be another Saturday in October and 100 people who mingled at the golf course after the race couldn't have shared each other's stories and laughter and company. And KMXT wouldn't have benefited from the good will generated by it all.

What Erin did was take a single idea, focus on it relentlessly and follow it through to fruition. That's how it's done. That's how KMXT can grow and prosper and be a success. If KMXT had that kind of commitment from a dozen or even a half-dozen people who support us like Erin does, all the obstacles that challenge us would be overcome with ease. No more scrambling to find people to help out with crossing guard duty, on-air pitching during the fundy, or even board shifts. If we had more ambassadors like Erin, who spread the gospel of public radio and KMXT, we'd bust our fund raising goals twice a year, instead of having to spend extra days trying to shake a few extra dollars from the trees.

KMXT, its volunteers and listeners are lucky Erin Harrington has adopted the station. Are there more Erins out there? Are you the next Erin? Because if you are, we all could use your help.

THANK YOU U.S.C.G. KODIAK

Over the years KMXT has been fortunate to have had volunteers from the Coast Guard Community serve on our Community Advisory Board, Board of Directors and as On-Air Volunteers.
We have recieved e-mails from past Coast Guard residents who are still listening to us, now via the web. These e-mails are a reminder of what a great public radio station we have here in Kodiak. It is also a reminder of how much the station and Kodiak means to those who have served here.
Coast Guard Appreciation Week is in August and we here at KMXT would like to thank everyone one in the Coast Guard for all you do for Kodiak both on the shore and on our waters.

Goodbye Cake Says it all!

Decorated by KMXT station Engineer, Joe Stevens, this cake had special meaning for those who know Radio Speak.

KMXT our call letters, NOJ Bills work call letters, 73 Billy, means Best Wishes. And the Morse Code says "Signing off".

Thanks Joe for the educational Cake :) A good time was had by the well wishers who stopped by Friday night to wish On-air Volunteer and KMXT Board Member, Billy Heckler, the best as he leaves Kodiak Island.

ALOHA, BILL! Tonight at KMXT!

Stop by the station for Pizza and to say ALOHA to KMXT's own Billy Heckler! From 6 to midnight Friday the 15th, (that's tonight) it's the "Cruisen Music Show".

Bring a dish to share if you like and your requests. As we say farewell to Billy Heckler and wish him the best with his new assignment.

Maybe we can get him back to host next years Gong Show!!

"Aloha" Party for Billy Heckler

It is sad but true, we will be losing the "Cruisen Music Show". Unfortunately our “Cruisin’ Music” host, Billy “Rockfish” Heckler, is leaving the island. He has been a positive addition to the station with his infectious energy and humor, and will be missed.

Billy has not only been on the air, but served on our board of directors as well.
Billy was here serving as Senior Master Chief at ComSta but as happens with all Coast Guardsmen, it is time to move on, his tour is over.

Billy is an example of the quality of volunteers KMXT is fortunate to get from the Kodiak Coast Guard Base.

The farewell "Cruisen Show" is happening Friday June 15th from 7 to midnight. Everyone is invited to call in or stop by Friday night between 7:30 and midnight to wish Billy the best and get those requests in!

Actually you will have one more chance to hear Bill on the air Sunday night as he hosts his final show, Nite Lite from 8 to 11 on Father's Day. But Friday will be the "Aloha Billy" Party. Questions call 486-3181. Snacks will be provided, but feel free to bring a dish to share.

Praise for "Kids Say The Darndest Things...."

I just ran across this blog from the crew of the Shanee and the following entry from Saturday:

Sunday, May 27, 2007 A glimpse of sun. Pictures, Part 2. The sun was flirting with us all day. It felt so great during the few times it poked through the grey. David arrived in the early morning from Anchorage. We worked hard all day on the boat. I mainly spliced lines dealing with the skiff tow bridle. I enjoyed the work. Its very meditative and we listened to some great music. Billy Bragg. REM. KYLIE. Beck. The Finches. Donovan. We also ventured into the Crab Festival for the first time. It never really changes, from year to year. We got fish and chips, fresh caught Kodiak cod. And the annual ice cream stand. $4 a pop, but well worth it. The days are counting down. We still have so damn much to do, and this 3-day weekend slows things down, with many local businesses and boat experts not working. I know we'll get it together though. The highlight of the day was listening to local Kodiak radio. They were doing a "Kids Say the Darndest Things"-type of thing. The host asked the kids "What would you be if you weren't a human?" One kid thought for a long time, and responded, "A Jesus."
More tomorrow!
